(Those who have read my trip reports here on my blog might have noticed that I did indeed write about a flight review on Emirates from Dubai to Hamburg. So why again? Well, it was a newer aircraft! So I hope you would enjoy reading this review for more!)

Let’s get started then….

After arriving safely from Cape Town, I had about 3 hours until the next flight to Hamburg. 3 hours is actually quite a quick layover when you consider Dubai International. Cuz about an hour of that will be gone on getting from the aircraft to the airport terminal and later from the terminal to the next aircraft.

It took us 25 minutes with these buses to get to Emirates Terminal at DXB. Gosh I really don’t like these bus rides, especially if you can’t get a place to sit! (first world problems…)

At the terminal after passing through security, I checked the information screens as usual to find the gate to my next flight. C39 was the gate for passengers going to Hamburg.

So I'd have to head left!

Before heading to my gate I grabbed myself a light breakfast and coffee at Cinnabon. I knew that C39 was unfortunately one of those gates where you would have a bus ride to your plane… When I was flying to Ho Chi Minh City from Dubai, it was somewhere around here too…

Although our planned boarding was at 8:15 AM, we started boarding the bus at the gate around 8:00 AM. I think we were the first ones to board the first bus. After 15 mins ride, we arrived at the rear door of our 3.5 years old parked Boeing 777-300ER aircraft ‘Echo November Juliet’. But the aircraft wasn’t ‘ready’ for us to board yet, so we had to wait 5 mins or so until boarding began with the stairs.

As we were the first to board the aircraft, it was still quite empty inside the cabin. So it was a nice opportunity to take some good photos, after which I found my seat quickly and settled down before anyone else could ‘block my access’.

The seat of course had its usual amenities – pillow, blanket, and headsets. Outside my window was one of the latest Emirates aircraft (A6-EPI) – wish we flew in that one!

It took around 25 minutes to complete boarding. The flight was pretty damn full! There were no free seats next to me but I wasn’t really bothered by it this time. My seat neighbors – two German women coming from holidays in Mauritius – were quite nice and friendly.

After boarding, refreshing towels and meal menus were distributed by the nice flight attendants. Then our captain came on the P.A. – informed us about 6 hours 20 mins flight duration at 36,000 ft and some weather info… boring.

At exactly 9:05 AM, our aircraft was being pushed back out of the parking area.

After 15 mins taxi, the plane arrived at the runway threshold and it was time to push the thrust levers forward and achieve V1 speed to be airborne at 9:20 AM. The views were quite great!

Just 7 minutes into our smooth take off, the seat belt signs were turned off. So after a while I started browsing the film selections and started watching ‘Our Kind of Traitor’ 15 mins into the flight. Oh btw, the cabin crew on this flight came from 14 countries and spoke 11 languages. Some of their countries were – Germany, Ukraine, Taiwan, Croatia, Italy, China, Poland, Jamaica, and South Korea.

Just 10 minutes after I started watching my movie, the system got stuck and unresponsive! It was really annoying trying to watch the movie that way so I requested one of the flight attendants to restart the IFE system, which she kindly did after a while! Then it was working without any issues 🙂

Breakfast was served 35 mins after take off. It was the same continental breakfast as I had on several occasions before on this very same flight. Oh wait, the menu first.

The breakfast wasn’t anything new or special for me so I finished almost everything in just about 15 minutes. 2 hours into the flight I finished watching the movie. It wasn’t that good really, but I must admit that some scenes were cut off or censored on the version aboard this aircraft.

I took some shots as we were flying over Iran and Turkey!

30 minutes after finishing my movie, hot towels were given to prepare us for lunch.

There were about 3 hours left until arrival so I decided to watch another movie. However I struggled to find a new/good movie so I just started watching Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

The appetizer once again, wasn’t my thing. I’ve had better coleslaw salads. The lamb dish was as delicious as ever – seriously Emirates’ lamb dishes never disappointed me so far and I always enjoy having it on board! But the best part of this lunch? The Chocolate Mousse Dessert! I mentioned about how much I loved the dessert on my previous flight from Cape Town to Dubai but this beat even that one! It was a complete foodgasm and by far the best dessert I’ve had on a plane!

My lunch was done in about 35 minutes.  There was a little more than 2 hours left as we were flying over European airspace.

37 minutes prior to landing our First Officer came on the P.A. to give us information on landing time and the not-s0-nice weather in Hamburg. Then the aircraft started its descend about half an hour before arrival.

We touched down at exactly 13:29 local time and arrived at our gate bridge after 8 mins of taxi.

At which point I looked at my phone only to discover that my phone was not switched on to ‘Flight Mode’ the entire flight!  😯

To Sum Up

This was one of the smoothest flights I’ve had, with nearly zero turbulence! The food was mostly great, except maybe the usual boring breakfast. Movie selection was unfortunately not that good, but that may be because of my taste and the fact that I watched most of the films already. Aircraft was pretty full but that didn’t bother me much, except when I had to disturb my seat neighbors to go to the lavatory few times 😛

Until next time EK!
